Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
