Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
