Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio
The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Matteo's Unexpected Comeback
A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
